Why results day is so rewarding as a tutor

Yesterday was one of those days that reminds me why I love being a tutor.
I was absolutely delighted to see all of my A level Maths students achieve the grades they had been working towards. The students who achieved A and A* deserve huge congratulations for their hard work and dedication.
But today, I want to give special recognition to a different kind of success.
Some of my students started A level Maths with a Grade 7 at GCSE and significant gaps in their algebraic skills. They found the transition to A level far more demanding than expected, particularly during the first year.
Yet they persevered.
With consistent tutoring, encouragement and mentoring, they achieved Grade Bs in A level maths yesterday.
I couldn't be more proud of them.
In my eyes, these students are the real heroes. They took on a significant challenge, faced hurdles along the way and refused to give up. Even better, they were celebrating yesterday knowing they had secured places at their first-choice universities.
That is what makes tutoring so rewarding.
Helping an already strong mathematician achieve an A* is satisfying. But helping a student with weaker foundations, low confidence and a real struggle with A-level Maths develop the skills and confidence to achieve a B is something very special.
Not every student needs more ability. Sometimes they need the right support, patience, encouragement and someone who believes in them.
To all my students, congratulations. You have made me incredibly proud.
And to parents whose child is struggling with A level Maths, don't assume that struggling now means they cannot succeed. With the right support, a challenging starting point does not have to determine the final result.
